Watersmeet High School has an unusual nickname – the Nimrods. Nimrod in this case isn’t an insult (Nimrod was the Great Grandson of Noah and described in the Bible as a mighty warrior.)

The Nimrods were made famous nationally in 2004 by some ESPN ads with the tagline, “Without sports, who would cheer for the Nimrods?” (see one of the Ads here)

The frenzy that followed was amazing. The team appeared on the Jay Leno show.

They sold thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. (Proceeds go to a scholarship for Watersmeet students.)

An 8-part documentary was put together called Nimrod Nation.

And with all of that pressure and attention the school went out and won the 2005 State Championship.
