Dr. Stryker (Athens High Class of ’13) is a pretty interesting guy.
He got a teaching degree from Western Michigan and taught in a 1-room schoolhouse. He left and fought in WWI in the Army.
After he got out, he went to medical school at the University of Michigan and returned to the area to be an orthopedic surgeon.
He began tinkering at home and came up with a few tools you might be familiar with, like an oscillating bone saw and a bed that rotated in all directions.
That tinkering led Home to start his own company – Stryker Industries.
His legacy lives on. The medical school at Western is now known as the Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine.
