Just south of Ludington is a little town called Pere Marquette.
Matt Hughes grew up there and was quite an athlete – he was good enough to be inducted into the Mason County Sports Hall of Fame.
Matt’s biggest athletic accomplishment was in rowing. He competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and placed 5th in something called quadruple sculls. He won the world championships in the event earlier that year.
Matt was also the goalie for Ludington High School soccer team and had a 44-4-3 record.
