This sign looked like it had just been finished hours before we took the picture. There were very fresh tire tracks all around it. (Maybe they heard we were planning on driving past it).
Not shown on the sign is the fact that Kalkaska hosts the National Trout Festival every year since 1935, coinciding with the opening of trout season in April. There is a giant trout sculpture in the downtown area.
Ernest Hemingway traveled the area in 1916 fishing with some friends and later used the area as a background in his books “The Battler” and “The Light of the World.”
There is a rumor that the Blazers won the state basketball title in 1916 but that was before the MHSAA was formed so it is taken with a grain of salt.
