Whittemore is pretty small – about 400 people total call it home and the city is less than one square mile.

But, as the sign says, it is the home of Michigan’s oldest speedway – founded back in 1948.

Apparently, a traveling carnival was scheduled to stop in Whittemore, but it couldn’t make it.

The city was pretty disappointed but the fire department stepped up to save the day and bring some entertainment to the small town.

The firemen got together and decided to stage some races with their cars. They set up a rough track and drove around for a while.

The idea stuck. The track got a little bigger and a little better. It is known for its unique, steeply banked cornered quarter-mile oval (the same size as the high school track around a football field).

The Speedway is owned by the Whittemore Speedway Association, a non-profit race club founded by the same firefighters that started the track.

Races are held every Saturday from May – September.
