I saw this sign on a vacation with my wife and two daughters. They had no idea at all who George Gipp was (I’m not sure if either of our two sons would know either). But I did and I was pretty excited.
Many people, with the exception of the females in my family, know that George Gipp played football at Notre Dame.
He apparently went there to play baseball and was recruited to play football by Knute Rockne. He was an All-American and still holds the record for yards per carry (8.1). He was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
The Gipper died as a result of pneumonia. On his deathbed he reportedly told Knute Rockne this:
“I’ve got to go, Rock. It’s all right. I’m not afraid. Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they’ve got and win just one for the Gipper. I don’t know where I’ll be then, Rock. But I’ll know about it, and I’ll be happy.”
In the movie: Knute Rockne – All American, George Gipp was played by Ronald Reagan.
