The Jackson Black History Tour Group was formed in 1994 by Mrs. Shirley Pitts, a teacher at Jackson High School, with a goal to educate people about diversity and to fight racism.
Mrs. Pitts (or Mama Pitts) took the students in the tour group around the state and the country to deliver their message of hope, love, and racial harmony. The students did this through programs that involved skits, songs, poetry, dramatic reading, and cultural history. The Tour Group targets areas where there is little or no diversity and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
The tour group has been to the White House at least 4 times and performed at the Inauguration of President Obama.
Mrs. Pitts retired in 1999 and passed away in 2014.
